Undertakes Crucial Building Restoration
The National Fund for Sacred Spaces announced on Monday that St. Peter’s-San Pedro Episcopal Church in Salem will receive a $250,000, 2:1 matching grant to fund historic preservation efforts that will restore many aspects of the church so that the entire property can be utilized for missional purposes. This funding will support structural repairs to the historic church and chapel along with critical infrastructure throughout the property that will ensure that St. Peter’s-San Pedro will be preserved and active in Salem for another century or two.
St. Peter’s-San Pedro Church is a multicultural and bilingual community within the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and is a growing congregation that is deeply committed to leveraging its real estate assets for public good. With the nation’s oldest church bell in its tower dating to 1740, along with a 10-bell chime from 1885, St. Peter’s is a prominent feature of Salem’s downtown, an area that draws over a million tourists each year. Historic tours offered by St. Peter’s share its rich colonial and Revolutionary War history and connection to the Salem witch trials through its founder, Philip English. Home to an active congregation that offers worship and multiple Alcoholic Anonymous and other recovery meetings, Tai Chi, concerts, theatrical performances, historic presentations and community meetings in its spaces, St. Peter’s is focused on stewarding its property in a way that matches its very strong commitment to the marginalized in Salem. Through programs such as its Free Winter Coat Closet, Laundry Love, its diaper ministry and emergency financial assistance, St. Peter’s-San Pedro works hard to be a fully engaged and active community partner.
Restoration efforts will range from structural repairs to the bell tower, a complete restoration of the historic English bell that has tolled for the death of every US president, to extensive repairs to the church and undercroft along with the 1872 Chapel, and related electrical and HVAC systems. The two-year campaign to restore St. Peter’s follows recent restorations to two of its three historic cemeteries. Since 2019, the church has consulted with engineers, architects, and preservation experts on how best to safeguard the building’s character, which is the oldest in Salem that still exists on the spot where it was established.
The present St. Peter’s church building replaced the 1733 wooden original 100 years later. Built in 1833 of Rockport granite by famed architect Isaiah Rogers, the main church adjoins St. Peter’s Chapel that was constructed on top of its original church graveyard in 1872. The chapel served as a pandemic COVID testing site for the City of Salem with over 1000 people a day passing through its doors.

St. Peter’s-San Pedro is one of 16 organizations to receive a total of over $3.5 million in grant funding that provides training, planning grants, technical assistance, capacity-building support, and capital grants to congregations of all faiths. Now in its eighth year, the National Fund has awarded or pledged over $21.5 million to 113 community-serving congregations representing 39 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. So far, this grantmaking has resulted in over $3 leveraged for every grant dollar invested in participating congregations.
